Use Boxmen

Everything about Use Boxmen says ‘happy.’ The music sparkles in the background, what simple narration exists in the game is silly and smile-inducing and the characters ooze charm out whatever wazoo they might have in their deformed crayoned bodies. It would be such a great setup for a bit of coffee break relaxation. Such a pity then, that it isn’t. What we have here is a deceptive little piece of software designed purely to lure in unsuspecting gamers with its friendly demeanor, and then savagely drop them into some of the most challenging puzzles ever to involve mass stickman slaughter.

The Forum that Could

Not every origin story involves radioactive spiders, murdered parents or babies sent from planets with silly names. Sometimes a single idea, an offhand conversation or an innocent post on a forum can find a life of its own. Let’s throw a party. Let’s start a band. Let’s make a game. Like a snowball tossed down the side of a mountain, these ideas can gather speed and strength. And over time, that one little idea becomes something that makes people sit up, notice, and occasionally get a face full of snow.

Doom: Fall of Mars

Some things are destined to go together. First person shooters and explosive barrels. Pictures of cats and funny captions. The world is full of people who think to themselves, “Hey, I like peanut butter. I like chocolate. Why not put them together?” Some of these combinations are somewhat misguided (chalk down being naked while cooking bacon as a failure) but occasionally from two great things is birthed a product of such awe-inspiring genius, we all wonder why we never thought of doing it ourselves. And so we come to DOOM: Fall of Mars.

National Defense 2 Review

Mastermind: World Conqueror Review

In the mainstream market there has been a lot of focus on moral dilemmas recently. Bioshock asked its players if they would rather save deformed little girls than bump them off for the ability to set their hands on fire. Fallout 3 wanted to know if greed is enough motivation to sacrifice an entire town. Even GTA 4, the game with a heart so black it makes total eclipses seem just a tad gloomy, had a couple of moments that had its audience asking themselves, “Good lord, what have I just done?” (Although admittedly the poignancy of these moments is dulled slightly by the amount of moments where the players just giggled and said “Did you see his head go under that truck?”)

Blastion Review

It’s rare that a fresh concept is exceptionally implemented in its first incarnation, but that is exactly what Miktar Dracon has accomplished with Blastion. Taking the idea of racking up points with limited lives and flipping it on its head, Blastion’s gameplay is quite unlike anything else in recent memory. While the motivation given to the player is fairly standard, scoring enough points to earn that ever-challenged number one spot on the scoreboard, it can take a little while to get used to the new concepts offered.
